What is Early Neurological Stimulation and Why We Use It at Redwall Retrievers

At Redwall Retrievers, we are passionate about raising confident, healthy, and resilient puppies that grow into exceptional companions and working dogs. One of the ways we accomplish this is through a special program called Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). If you've never heard of ENS before, let us take a moment to share what it is, where it came from, and why it’s an essential part of how we raise our litters.

What is ENS?

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is a simple but highly effective method designed to help puppies get the best possible start in life. Beginning when the puppies are just three days old and continuing until they are 16 days old, ENS involves a series of gentle handling exercises. These exercises include holding the puppies in different positions, lightly stimulating their toes with a Q-tip, and exposing them to mild temperature changes. These small, controlled stressors are introduced during a critical stage in their neurological development, helping to build resilience and stimulate healthy growth.

The History Behind ENS

Did you know ENS was first developed by the U.S. military in the 1970s as part of their "Super Dog" program? The goal was to produce military dogs that could handle high levels of stress and perform effectively in challenging environments. Researchers discovered that introducing mild stressors during a puppy's early development improved their cardiovascular health, boosted their immune system, and enhanced their ability to cope with stress. Over time, breeders and trainers adopted ENS as a way to raise healthier, more adaptable puppies. At Redwall Retrievers, we’re proud to continue this proven tradition.

Why We Use ENS at Redwall Retrievers

We believe that every puppy deserves the best start in life, and ENS is one way we ensure that happens. Puppies raised with ENS tend to be more confident, better at handling new situations, and healthier overall. Whether they are destined to be beloved family companions, skilled hunting dogs, or therapy animals, ENS gives them a strong foundation to succeed. Not only does it help improve their physical and mental health, but it also makes the transition to their new homes smoother, as these puppies are often more adaptable and less prone to stress.

Our Commitment to Raising Exceptional Puppies

At Redwall Retrievers, ENS is just one of the ways we go above and beyond for our puppies. By implementing this method, we are investing in their long-term health, happiness, and success. Whether you’re bringing home a new hunting partner or a loyal family companion, you can feel confident knowing that your Redwall Retriever has been nurtured from the very start to reach their full potential.
